Translate selected text on Mac without breaking your reading flow

Selection translation removes the copy, app switch, paste, and return steps from everyday reading.

The translation itself is rarely the slow part. The interruption comes from leaving a webpage, PDF, email, or chat, moving the text into a separate service, and then finding your place again.

TranslateWindow keeps the result close to the selected sentence, so you can continue from the same place after reading it.

Why in-context translation feels faster

With the source and result on screen together, you can compare a term with the original sentence, dismiss the result, and continue from the same position.

This helps with research and support work, where only a few sentences on each page need translation. You can check them without opening a separate browser tab.

Use the smallest useful translation

  • Select a complete sentence when grammar or tone affects the meaning.
  • Select a short phrase when you are checking terminology inside a familiar paragraph.
  • Add nearby context or choose a specialized scene for an ambiguous technical, legal, or business expression.
  • Open multi-result comparison only when the first answer leaves a real decision to make.

When selection is not available

Some applications draw text instead of exposing it to macOS, and images or videos do not provide selectable characters. In those cases, screenshot OCR is the correct fallback. If the same area changes repeatedly, switch to a live translation region rather than capturing it again and again.

TranslateWindow places selection, screenshot, clipboard, manual input, and live-window modes in one command panel so changing input method does not require changing products.

Choose local or cloud processing intentionally

A local model is appropriate for private messages, drafts, and internal documents because the translation text can remain on the Mac. Cloud services can offer wider language support or stronger generative rewriting, but the selected content is then processed by the chosen provider.

The active model determines that boundary. Check whether a local or cloud model is selected before translating sensitive text.

Make translation part of reading
